Home Office in Charge

This is a rather subversive post as it has not been cleared by the 'home office', so please keep it to yourself.

Here is a list of words used by Punjabi men to refer to their wife (or 'second half'):

munde/kuri di maa(n), ghar wali, sighani, baotee, dharampatni, heer, sathi, and of course home office.

This list is by no means exhaustive, so please free to add to the list.

Click here to see the updated list (updated 2/12/05, 14:16).

i had never heard of this phrase before until recently...my boss asked me if i could go play golf and i was like sure would love to but...and before i could finish my sentence he said "you don't have a KITCHEN PASS?"...i was like what!...he said KITCHEN PASS is when you ask your wife and she approves your outing. it's funny but that's the reality of it.

haven't seen manjit in a while...i'm gonna go see what he's up to. *

ik singh ji your knowledge on this subject appears to be immense! I think I'm going to add a link on the post for people to view the full list!

And I hope you've got a kitchen pass to be spending so much time on the computer..hehe

ps did you mean "... what she's up to" rather than "he"?

ricky said...

haa haa! :) big fan of punjabi... slang that's all!:)

and i don't need a kitchen pass when i'm at work(which i am right now). and at night i blog along side my wife when she's watching (dvr-ed) Oprah.

i'm glad you asked msingh ji. i was talking about SikhsRUs (Manjit Ji). I'm pretty sure you know eachother from mrsikhnet.
if not:

i'm sure there're more creative ones out there...here's one more:

Gandasi, (as in ax) as in kar gandasi beTHi ah...vadd sutu menu!

ik singh, not from sikhnet, but I do visit rsingh's blog from time to time - I've got a link his blog on my blog's sidebar. And, while I've got your attention, seems like you've taken a break putting stuff on your blog?? (must admit I'm at a crossroads re my blogging activities).

Dag Erik Nygaard thank for visiting and for your comment.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but your blog isn't operating properly. ony the first post shows up.

about project gurmukhi...i was telling seek that my daily routine (my sadhna) has been messed up for the first time in 10 years and i think that affected the project as well along with personal life. but just today i got an email from someone who lives nearby and would like to work together on a project. so hopefully we can accomplish something together.

everyone's different...raised differently, different dna and work differently. i really don't know what happened in the past couple of months. but i feel like the energy and drive is coming back again.

i also invited the punjabi linux team from moga and gurpartap to my brother's wedding in jalandhar so we could have meetings of the mind of sort. really look forward to meeting them. they've done an amazing job advancing our precious language.

well re your blog...i think even if you just tell your everyday life it'll have audience. i don't know how fruitful it might be but it'll have audience. you could talk about UK...and sikh community in uk.

i find it interesting that you and sol live in such a small country but don't have the same knowledge about all things uk/uk sikhs.

i think the other guy was a spammer...

i lost my train of thought...

ik thanks for letting me know about the problem with my blog - now fixed. Amazing what effect one little piece of html can have.

I doubt if anybody's life can be plain sailing non-stop. We all must face times / situations that are difficult. The important thing is how we deal / cope with these situations, and this is where perhaps the different dna, upbringing, religious beliefs, etc. come into play. Just to take an example, I've seen a big contrast in how sikhs I know deal with death of a family member. Mostly there is understandably great sorrow, crying and shock. The presence of SGGS and the recitation of the sehaj path helps and gives some comfort. But there's also many sikh families when you go to give your condolances (afsos), you find their focus is on doing kirtan everyday until the final rites, and less time on brooding and crying.

Sometimes I think you need the bad patches to appreciate the good times!

About being at a crossroads with my blogging activities, I've been thinking about it for a while and plan to do a post on this sometime in the future,

You said it, "...everyone's different...raised differently, different dna and work differently" This might explain why solarider and I don't appear to have the same knowledge of things UK.

btw, what happened with your planned stopover in the UK during your trip to India?

well...we were going to buy the tix today...cuz the airline lowered the prices and then when we were ready to book they raised them again by $200 each. so we were all set to go thru amsterdam...but now everything's up in the air again.

what's more strange is that if you fly virgin from california it costs $1100...if you fly virgin from DC it costs $2000+...what is up with that?

now it's BA or virgin or the amsterdam flight...

i'm meating that dude tomorrow (god willing) to discuss the gurmukhi projects. we live a mile away from eachother...but i have a fealing he's from either Cunada or balait.

i don't like it when people cry (in public).

Anonymous said...

lol...Cunada..then he'll come with a storm hidden behind his eyes..just don't push any buttons too hard :P:P

And God isingh Veerji, bhabhi has toooooooo many names. And makes me wonder msingh ji what's on your mind for this post. Would it be ok to ask (which i am anyways :P), r u married? And which name do you use :P Although 'Heer' is GORGEOUS. isingh veerji, u better call bhabhi that and god, be in treat for a wonderfoool day ;)

And definitely what is up with that $1100/$2000 variation...ugh...i can assume how much the airlines hate dc ppl..:)

ik singh you dude (just wanted to this word), I'm sure everything will work out just fine.

siki seeker I think I already gave it away when I said this post has not been cleared by the home office, so I must be well and truly married,

I don't really want to talk about myself, suffice to say my father received a telegram from the queen this year.

moam bathee, now that's rather sweet, anybody would just melt when called with that name..

so nobody's curious about this "telegram from the queen" business?

msingh said...

just thought of a funny sounding but cute word, "mao(n) billee" - not that I'm suggesting for one minute that anybody uses this to address their partner.

i call my daughter that.

but yes, i was curious...but am actually busy today(working from home)...please tell us why your dad was summoned by the Queen?

Anonymous said...

msingh - congrats to your dad; so has he received a knighthood/honour/etc or reached the grand old age of 100?

Either way vadiyah.

I received my degree certificate from Princess Anne; as she's the chancellor of University of London; but it was no big deal ;-)

Well there's a totally useless bit of "info" for you. I guess that'll confirm Ik Singhs views about what we all know ;-))))

Ik Singh - Just kidding.

msingh ji - that is totally amazing. My grad father lived into his late 80 and was still remarking fit except for his later years when he became ill.

It's really great to here you father has lived 100 years - he must have some amazing stories and experiences to tell. I always regret that I never learnt more from my grandfather when I had the chance.

It's a mistake I aim to not allow futher generations of our family to make.

lakh lakh vidayh to your whole family

PS.yeah I was supposed to do something or other related to computing; but I always found everybody elses subjects so much more interesting than my own - a "problem" that I continues to afflict me still ;-)

PS - it just occurred to me; is you dad one of the oldest (if not oldest) Sikh in the UK (I'm assuming he is in the UK as he got a telegram from the Queen)?

I havent heard of any other 100(+) year old Sikhs. I think we should get him some publicity if you'd like that is.

Let me know - I can arrange in the Sikh/Punjabi media in the UK and further afield as well.

If he'd rather not that is that is cool too.

And 'moan battie' -candle, is cute....pretty much melts your heart away..lol. Although its hilarious to imagine someone actually using all these crazy ideas in real life :D:D
The farthest I've seen my dad go is from Darling (the oldest), to honey to Jaanoo :P Aww, hez quite a romantic..hehe. I think if he ever tries to go offstream, he would just end up annoying mom, cuz she thinks he waists a lot of time on creativity in romance than ACTUALLY helping around the house and with chores :P
