Damsel in Distress - Follow Up

I recently wrote about the episode when I and my brother were faced with the dilemma of whether or not we should give money to a damsel (apparently) in distress. Like all good “Manvir Singh” stories, there is more to this curious story.

A couple of days after the incident I had gone to the hospital to see my father, with just a tiny bit of remorse lingering in the back of my mind for not having given any money to this lady. At the hospital I saw that several other family members had also come to visit my father, including my sister-in-law. Imagine my surprise when I heard my sister-in-law start talking about a lady asking for money outside the hospital! “Kamal hai” I thought to myself, wondering if it might be the same person we had met. I was soon able to ascertain that this was indeed the same woman who had accosted us, but unlike our encounter, she did manage to get money this time. My sister-in-law facing the same request for £12 ended up giving £20 because she had no change.

There’s no doubt now that this lady was operating a scam, possibly netting a handsome amount on a good day. As to why she was doing this - my guess is that it may be connected with the need to buy drugs. Chalo, Rab bhali karey. 2/2/06

haaha! i would love to calculate the figures for you but not really having the bestest of days...

but anyways...i don't know the map of england...so i'm going to ask you a Southall question (that manvir refuses to answer for some reason)...and i apologize in advance if you live like 100,000 miles away from Southall and have never been to Southall and don't know nothing about the place...but...do they, in southall have big programs like Dhadi Jatha at the Gurudwaras every Sunday or every Gurupurab or is it just by chance and luck that you might see them...???

our trip to india and everything along with it got canceled...:( Chalo jo rab di marzi!

ik singh ji, sorry to hear about the cancellation of your trip, hopefully you'll make it another time. I'll have to have a word with Manvir, but in reply to your question I guess the gurudwara programs are pretty much similar to what you have there. Gurudwaras have a regular sunday diwan, usually between 8.00am and 2.00pm (some gurudwars like Singh Sabha in Southall have kirtan and katha happening all day on sunday). I have to admit I haven't been going to the gurudwara very recently, but from experience kirtan will usually be done by visiting ragis, and yes from time to time these will well known ones like sri nagar wale. We have dhahdi jathas from time to time, but not on a regular basis. Katha seems to be very popular with the sangat at the big gurudwaras in Southall. Hope this goes some way in answering your question (help me out Manvir Singh ji!).

By the way, I'm quite the opposite to being like 100,000 miles away from Southall.

Preet ji, thanks for your appreciation - you've got me wondering, perhaps I know you - care to give me some clues?

I feel there is more behind your last comment about trust, perhaps you could you elaborate.

Nice post :)

Ek Singh bhai sahib the post you left a comment in got deleted so I didn't get oppurtunity to reply to you.

Park Avenue Gurdwara Southall daily programme is:
5pm - Rehraas
5.30 - 6.30pm - Keertan
6.30 - 7.15pm - Katha
7.15 - 8pm - Dhadi / Kavishree

The timings my change here and there.

On Sunday the programme is extended with Keertan/Katha/Dhadi/Kavishri happening from morning to evening.

Same programmes should be happening in Havelock Rd. Gurdwara.

Ik Singh veer, I don't know what's you issue with spelling it with p??? THe word Bhaji comes from 'Bhara' (brother) and in punjabji it is "bh" and not 'p'. I wonder why you choose 'p'?!?!

Msingh,

You have the right attitude about the lady, especially your last line sums it up pretty well!

Ik Singh, Sorry to hear about your trip cancellation! Hey I am thinking about next year with the whole family, may be we can connect if time, money and Waheguru permits. Like you, we would have to find a place to stay as well! Almost every distant and close relative that I know is in Canada, U.S. and England.

i was going through various blogs when i came upon this posting, i gotta say i was done good a proper, ealing hospital coming into see my wife and new daughter. the very same lady came out with what is now obviously a rehearsed act, and me being as gullible as ever handed over £10 then watched her run off to help save her dad or something!!!
