Beauty & the Beast

In today's world there is no shortage of aids, artifacts, chemicals,, etc. to bring about a show of external beauty. Waxing, perming, liposuction, bleaching,...the list goes on. Surely there is something to be said for the simple and natural approach - for one thing at least less time is wasted on the daily chore of grooming. There's also the question of for what purpose, or for who are we going to all this trouble for?

Perhaps it's the inner beauty that really matters, the one that exudes warmth, humility, sincerity, joy de vivre,...

But hey, who am I to judge - it's all in the eye of the beholder.

When I took the first look at it, I thought, hmmm...so is msingh saying that the flower is the beauty and the crinkled bark, the beast. But then I look at the bark, and it's gorgeous! So, I concluded that you consider both beautiful for they are natural and they derive their unique beauty in their sheer undisturbed existence. And then...
Then I ponder on the 'beauty of the beast'! Beast exists naturally too...if God made beauty, so did He make the beast (if there is one)...and How we miss to take notice of the fresh, undiscovered beauty of the beast - the one who is simply 'beauty' to its maker :)

Very nicely put sikhi seeker.

I nearly put the title of the post as "Beauty of the Beast"... - to be honest this post was a bit of a ramble, but I did aknowledge your viewpoint when I said it's all in the eye of the beholder.

As for me, I have yet to learn to appreciate beauty, immersed in maya as I am.

Msingh ji, when you say you are 'yet' immersed in maya...to me, someone soo far away, it sounds untrue. Very untrue. I'd never imagine the character 'msingh' i know in this virtual world of my 'Guru's Sangat' is affected by maya. I don't know what I am trying to hit at...but give yourself credit! I can undestand the kick that pushes you out of the enticing circle of maya, everytime you admit the guilt within...
I guess I can conclude by saying that if I can see the beauty in your charcter - the true beauty, untouched by the five evils...then give yourself a fair chance to see and celebrate that beauty as well:)

I suppose it's about being honest and acknowledging where one is on the path laid out by Guru Ji. The judgement of wether one is free from the shakles of maya has to be based on our everyday conduct in life. But certainly agree with you about not getting into any sort of guilt complexes about shortcomings - the chardikala way is to carry on with the journey.

And yes, just like the catalyst in a chemical reaction, sangat is the catalyst the progress of our spiritual journey.

Sound like I'm rambling again

this brings up another point - how sikhi seeker above just mentioned that they cannot believe you, msingh, could be affected by maya

that comment is proof that it is all in the eye of the beholder

we are all a little bit deluded when it comes to OTHERS and their avastha.

some of us see others as horrible when they are actually great.

and some of us see others as great, when they are actually horrible.

ann, the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" means that the beauty lies within the person/thing in question...not in the eyes of the person "holding/looking" "it".

that phrase is so misused it's not even funny!

so the only person who knows his/her beauty is msingh.

and when someone tells me especially on the internet something less than flattering on the internet about themselves i tend to believe them. :)

also about maya...i also try to get it anyway (my conscience...big time spelling error there...would allow it)...i can never have enough...and i will never have enough...but maya comes (for people like me) by working hard...yes, i could work hard on other altruistic things but i chose not to...i want maya...because i understand that person without maya has a very low voice in this world and person with maya can speak in low tone but people will scramble to hear that person...and i don't believe in "everyone's great" theory...not everyone is great...only the few are...yes, some are great and their potential goes unscratched but most of the time great people are great and for people like us who aren't great we need maya to do things...the altruistic things...

also, guys i lost project:gurmukhi blog!!!!

isingh sorry to hear about your blog, what happened? I did get around to listening to a couple of podcasts.

I guess it's also an acknowledgement that where I don't see beauty, others might see otherwise, and both viewpoints are valid. Sounds like this phrase could be a good starting point for discussion on diversity and equality.

about maya - I'm referring to it in the wider sense, money, attachment to family and friends, desire for status, etc. It's a pretty tall order to free oneself from the grip of maya, but with the guidance of guru and sangat perhaps....

as for money, I have no qualms of making vast amounts if the opportunity arose (I've even entered the lottery a few times). The important point for me is why we want more money. If it's to do more of eat, drink and be merry then I'm not sure. If on the other hands, if it's going facilitate us doing more projects to help the needy and suffering, promoting sikhi, etc, then great, give me money!

msingh, you played the lottery???!!! tut tut tut! :) that's gambling and gambling isn't allowed in sikh dharma. i'm half joking here...

but i wonder people who win the lottery do they think of themselves as "lucky" or "a sign from god"...or what...i've never really won a lottery before...i won a raffle thingie of $150 once (it was free to enter)...i was just like ehh...and immediately started thinking about how to turn it into cash :). i couldn't belee it. eryone was so jealous. why are people like that? i would never act like that!...well unless it was my brother :)

about the blog if i can't recover it i'll have to start over i guess...good thing i didn't put EVERYTHING on there...i really don't know what happened to it.

gurinder, did you do something?

Samar Ji thank you for your kind comment. I hope I haven't described myself as mayadhari, in my profile I state that I'm still under the influence of maya and hope to break free.
